Aethalion reticulatum (Linnaeus, 1767) (Hemiptera: Aethalionidae) in Grevillea robusta PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The grevilea, Grevillea robusta (Cunn), species of the  Proteaceae family, native of Australia it was introduced in Brazil and in several other countries of the world, for ornamentation, wind breaks and to shade agricultural  crops. In general the grevilea has few pests in its area of natural dispersion and also in Brazil. Recently a severe infestation of the cicada Aethalion reticulatum (Hemiptera: Aethalionidae) was verified in experimental plantings of  grevilea’s plantation in São Miguel Arcanjo, SP. This is the first verification of A. reticulatum causing damages to G. robusta. A. reticulatum is an sap sucking insect and the damages in grevilea are similar to the observed in fruit  plants.

Bio-energy from Mountain Pine Beetle Timber and Forest Residuals: The Economics Story AgEcon

In light of the large volumes of pine killed in the Interior forests in British Columbia by the mountain pine beetle, many are keen to employ forest biomass as an energy source. To assess the feasibility of a wood biomass-fired power plant in the BC Interior it is necessary to know both how much physical biomass might be available over the life of a plant, but also its location because transportation costs are likely to be a major operating cost for any facility. To address these issues, we construct a mathematical programming model of fiber flows in the Quesnel Timber Supply Area of BC over a 25-year time horizon. The injuries of Ctenarytaina spatulata Taylor, 1977, were characterized through observations in field,  laboratory and greenhouse. The first injuries of C. spatulata in Eucalyptus grandis are caused during  oviposition. At the point where the egg is inserted, a   small black spot appears, which may grow larger, causing the bud death. The insect eliminates large  amount of honeydew, accumulating on leaves and  apical parts, which starts the proliferation of sooty mold,  and fitopathogenic fungi. Leptographium bhutanense sp. nov., associated with the root collar weevil Hylobitelus chenkupdorjii on Pinus wallichiana in Bhutan Naturalis

Leptographium spp. are commonly associated with bark beetles and weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and some are important tree pathogens. In a recent survey of diseases and insect pests of conifer trees in Bhutan, the root collar weevil, Hylobitelus chenkupdorjii was found girdling young Himalayan blue pine (Pinus wallichiana) trees in Central Bhutan. Intensive wood staining and a Leptographium sp. were associated with damage by this insect. The fungus was also isolated from individuals of H. chenkupdorjii. It was tentatively identified based on morphology and then compared with other Leptographium spp. using DNA sequences for three gene regions. Primeiro relato de Sphacelodes vulneraria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) danificando Hovenia dulcis no Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

Hovenia dulcis Thunb. (Rhamnaceae), conhecida popularmente como uva-do-japão, é comumente utilizada para sombreamento de aviários e chiqueiros no Sul do Brasil. É relatada pela primeira vez no Brasil a ocorrência de Sphacelodes vulneraria (Hübner, 1823) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae: Ennominae) danificando árvores de H. dulcis, e o seu potencial como nova praga desta espécie florestal.
